Saving the World with Bikes
Our slogan has forever been "Saving the World with Bikes." Everyone knows that bicycles are... well... good. You stay healthy when you ride them often, and you don't cause congestion or pollution when you use them for transportation.
But many people still ask us "exactly how are you saving the world with bikes?" We decided to suck it up and work on a few solid examples. It all comes down to the fact that riding your bike is good, (or even great!) and we really, really want you to ride your bike.
Here are some programs/rides/events/phenomenons that are designed to encourage you to ride your bike, and that Marty's is involved with on some level. This list should grow as we have more time to work on it. If you come up with anything we have missed, or know of other programs you think we should get involved with, email us! geoff@martysreliable.com Thanks.
The Morristown Bicycle Ride!
Do you dream of a town where your children can safely ride their bikes to the playground, or to a friend's house? Do you dream of a town when you can ride downtown and spend an afternoon shopping from store to store or just to get an ice cream cone?

See the Light!
We recently changed many of our light bulbs from halogen to compact flourescent. We also asked ourselves the question "How many bike mechanics does it take to screw in a light bulb?" We aren't sure of the answer yet.... In any case, the money savings and environmental benefits from switching over are huge! Here's a chart with the facts. |
Bulb Type | 75w Incandescent | 23w Compact Fluorescent |
Purchase Price | $.75 | $9 |
Life of bulb | 750 hours | 10,000 hours |
Number of hours burned per day | 4 hours | 4 hours |
Number of bulbs needed over 6.85 years | 14 | 1 |
Total cost of bulbs | $10.50 | $9 |
Lumens | 1,200 | 1,400 |
Total Cost of Electricty over 6.85 years (9.3cents/kWh total) | $69.95 | $21.45 |
Your total cost over 6.85 years | $80.45 | $30.45 |
Total money savings with Compact Fluorescent bulb | $50 |
With all this electricity we are saving, think of how much fuel we are saving over at the power plant! If you haven't already switched over, you should!
Note: Since this is technically "Saving the World with Light Bulbs" and not bikes, we are working on setting up a bike generator that Marty will have to ride during business hours to power all three stores.
