Every time I ride this bike, I smile. It's pure fun - feels like riding a bike felt in fifth grade. I use it primarily for neighborhood stuff - a quick ride to the store (2 miles), the mailboxes (1/2 mile), to ride with my kid to her elementary school (1 1/2 miles). It's ultra plush and totally silent. Downsides are the sloppiness in the assembly (I blame my LBS as much as Trek) - some bolts were loose, the brake needed to be adjusted and the grips haven't held up that well. But these are little nits - overall this thing is just pure fun.
This bike has been the best thing ever to ride around the city in! I Am constantly getting comments on how beautiful it is. This has been great to cruise around the streets and run my everyday errands. It does not have a kickstand, but they can be found easily for less than ten dollars. The basket has proved to be very useful and is not flimsy.
This is my first Trek, and I was tempted to buy a road bike because they are so light. But I love how smooth this bike rides. I also love the basket with the U-Lock holder, and the bicycle is very well made. I have no issues with it!
The bike is beautiful, but the quality is poor. First, the stem is not straight, nor is the handlebar. If you twist the handlebar one way it hits the top tube, but it clears it in the other direction. The handlebar has a couple of millimeters of misalignment, while the stem is not straight and is the major cause for the handlebars hitting the top tube on one direction but not the other. The paint has chips in it and you can see them under the clear coat. The water bottle cages are not aligned and one is tilted left while the other is pointing right, not centered. The fenders have paint run-on and chips as well. Overall, I'm really disappointed with this bike and Trek. Its not an expensive bike but not a cheap one either, and in either case the frame and parts should not be tweaked or mis-aligned and have paint issues that were just clear coated over instead of repainting it.
This bike should have been perfect for me. First, I'm the opposite of a "weight weenie": I've always enjoyed mashing past jerseyed-out roadie wannabes on my trike, old-steel Raleigh M80, and even a tandem towing kids. I also love retro/classic product updates that subtly incorporate modern manufacturing and performance features. Unfortunately, that's not what happened here; instead it seems like they slapped some leather and pearlcoat on a buck-fifty martbike to appeal to the most superficial, inexperienced buyer. I actually had a sub-$200 commuter that handled better than this Trek until the handlebar came loose (and about the same thereafter). The Steel District wobbled like a dying fish on a brief test ride up and down the straight, gentle, smoothly-paved hill next to the store - giving the lie to the cliché "it's like riding a bicycle". I love disc brakes for the hilly local streets and thought it would be great to get them on a relatively lightweight, inexpensive commuter, but these compared very unfavorably to the rim brakes I'd just tested on another bike. Whether you love or hate the styling is a matter of personal taste, but some of the unpainted hardware looks like the casting/forging sprues were Dremeled off in a hobbyist's garage.
